A Guide to Unpacking in your SE5 Area Home

Posted on 21/08/2014

Moving into a new home is very exciting, and as soon as you have unloaded your boxes into your new SE5 area home, you will want to unpack and settle in. If you rush into this you might find yourself surrounded by the contents of all your boxes, not knowing where anything is anymore and with a lot of mess that you have to clean away as soon as possible, don’t rush into unpacking and leave things in boxes until you are ready to unpack the entire contents of the box. Remember that you don’t need to have all of your things on show and readily accessible to have settled in, all you need is the essentials, trying to unpack quickly is just going to add stress to an already stressful day.

How can I help to prepare myself?

Try getting blue prints to your new home, or make a sketch of the layout of the house and start placing where your things are going to go in the new house. This will make it much easier when you come to unload the van as you can place things exactly where they need to go, furthermore it will ensure that everything you are planning to take with you will actually fit into your new property, which is always a concern especially if you’re new property is smaller or you have some particularly large furniture.

When you are packing make sure that you label all of your boxes clearly so that you know what room and where about in the room they need to be placed, knowing the contents of a box will give you a better idea how quickly that box needs to be unpacked, if there’s nothing of importance in there it could be left for a few days, even a couple of weeks. Also, when you are packing try to keep things that are going to be placed together in the new house, together in the box, so that when you come to unpack you can have all the things to one particular area all to hand, this will make unpacking much quicker.

Place all of your big furniture first as once you have started unpacking boxes there will be much more clutter and you may not be able to manoeuvre furniture around it all. Only open a box once you have every intention of emptying it completely, if you’re not sure where the things in the box are going to go then you should leave it until you have a better idea. When you have taken something out of the box make sure that you have somewhere for it to ‘live’ permanently in your new home. When you are fully unpacked your home should be free of clutter, if it isn’t then you should consider getting rid of some stuff.

Carefully consider what needs to be unpacked first and most urgently, and what can wait a little bit, rather than thinking that everything needs to be unpacked straight away. Some of the first things you should unpack first and for the first night of sleeping in your property include things like food, drinks, snacks and tea/coffee facilities to last at least the next 24 hours. You will also need linen for all of the beds, curtains to hang for some privacy and to hide away all of the valuable you will have on display, toiletries and towels for the bathroom for everyone and this includes any medications people might need.
